    For a collaborative project between Kaiser Health News and Spotlight PA that investigated the Pennsylvania state Department of Drug and Alcohol Program's lax oversight of addiction treatment facilities and the resulting harm to patients.

  • News Leaders Association’s Batten Medal for Coverage of the Coronavirus Pandemic (April 2021)

    Staff at Kaiser Health News and The Guardian won the award for the "Lost on the Frontline" project, to which I contributed profiles of individuals who died, as well as an investigative story on how employers were failing to report Covid-deaths as work-related.

  • Pennsylvania Keystone Award for Education Writing (April 2021)

    For my story about how racism impacts students of color in the state's public higher education system.

  • Keystone Award for Health & Medical Reporting, 2nd place (April 2021)

    For my story about how the state had repeatedly cut its rank of public health nurses, leaving the system unprepared for the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • NABJ Specialty Award (July 2019)

    For my story on sex education failing to serve young Black women

  • Pennsylvania Keystone Press Award for Diverse Journalist (April 2019)

    Received a statewide award for a journalist from a historically underrepresented group making an outstanding contribution to their newsroom. Also received an honorable mention in the category of covering diverse sources and stories.


Fellowships

  • Paul Miller Washington Reporting Fellowship (January 2024)

    Chosen as one of 20 promising young reporters for a year-long fellowship to learn about covering news in the nation's capital. Fellows learn about the Pentagon, the Supreme Court, the Capitol and other key Washington institutions. They review politics and policy with regulators, lawmakers, experts and the best reporters in the business.

  • University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Journalism Ethics Journalist-in-Residence (September 2023)

    The Center for Journalism Ethics' Journalist in Residence program brings nationally renowned journalists to campus to promote engagement with UW-Madison students and the public. During my week there, I visited undergraduate and graduate classes, met with student media leaders, and delivered a day-long training about ethically reporting on mental health, suicide, and addiction.

  • Rosalynn Carter Mental Health Journalism Fellowship (July 2019)

    Chosen as one of eight fellows from a national pool of nearly 100 applicants to receive a $10,000 award, along with training and mentoring, to complete a reporting project on mental health. My project focused on college mental health and included a series on Pennsylvania’s largest community college system eliminating mental health services, as well as the effects of systemic racism on mental health.

  • Comparative Effectiveness Research Fellowship (October 2018)

    One of 11 reporters chosen for a medical research reporting fellowship at PCORI (Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute) in Washington D.C. Spent a week learning best practices in reporting on clinical trials and how to read medical research with a critical eye.

  • Health Coverage Fellowship (May 2018)

    Chosen as one of 12 health journalists from around the country to spend a week-long fellowship in Massachusetts, getting a behind-the-scenes look at healthcare, from riding with EMTs to understanding the working of biopharma startups.
